Curriculum

The emergency medicine fellowship is a 54 week training program that will transition APPs into a career in acute care medicine by providing specialty specific didactics, patient care and procedural experience in a supervised and supported environment.

Goals

  1. To understand the full breadth and depth of the practice of emergency and urgent care medicine.
  2. Develop skills and knowledge necessary to effectively work clinically as an advanced practice provider in an emergency department or other acute care setting.

 

Objectives Based on Competencies

Consistent with the overriding framework of the ACGME (6) competencies, the educational objectives are followed, in bold italics, by the specific competencies they promote. Competencies are abbreviated as follows:  Patient Care (PC), Medical Knowledge (MK), Practice Based Learning and Improvement (PLBI), Interpersonal and Communication Skills (IPCS), Professionalism (P), Systems Based Practice (SBP)

 

Instructional Strategy

  1. A team of core faculty will provide bi-monthly teaching sessions on core emergency medicine topics framed by reading Tintinalli’s Emergency Medicine with a goal of completing this text by year’s end.
  2. Patient care in a medium sized Emergency Department alongside an Emergency Medicine Physician and in a fast paced walk-in clinic alongside an experienced midlevel provider to total an average of fourteen, 12 hour shifts per month. It is expected that the fellow will have greater than 1200 patient encounters in the Walk in clinic and in the Emergency Department.
  3. Procedural competency will be achieved through a combination of outside courses (CME – EM boot camp, focused didactic sessions) and longitudinal experience in the emergency department.
  4. Didactics will be formally provided by Bluewater ED physicians and experienced APPs along with specialty physicians where appropriate.
  5. Each fellow will complete a fellowship project, give monthly case presentations, attend medical staff meetings, and observe specialists outside of the ED to round out their experience as a provider.
  6. A method of graded autonomy and responsibility will be employed so that by the end of the fellowship year the trainee will be functioning with similar autonomy and responsibility as that of experienced APPs in the emergency department and acute care setting.

 

Evaluation Method

The fellow will be evaluated based on the following:

  1. Monitoring of clinical competence based on efficiency, resource utilization, patient as well as peer/staff relationships, chart review and direct supervision.
  2. Evaluations will be completed quarterly by program director based on ACGME’s 6 Core Competencies
  3. Procedures will be documented for numbers and skill level for each procedure
